The following review written by one of the Software Informer contributors applies to version 2.8
WinMerge is a tool that compares and merges files and folders. This merging utility allows to compare contents of any two files and find the differences between them. It also allows to merge the contents of one file with another's. It can also compare the contents of two folders. After performing a comparison or files or folders, it will present several navigation buttons for browsing through the found differences.
The program also allows to perform various operations over contents of files or folders, like rename, move, copy, delete and zip among many others, all just under one right click of a mouse. This comparing tool offers different customization options as well: changing colors, the way to compare whitespaces, capital letters, comparison method, it can even add columns and make reports. It integrates 7-Zip to be used within the program, provided it is available on one's system. The program suggests backing up files after comparison; it can manage versioning control for the changed files/folders.
Its GUI is simple and friendly to the user. Its installation process is very easy to perform. The documentation included with the program is very detailed; and the website also offers some links and additional information for better use of the application. WinMerge runs on Windows NT4/2000/XP platforms.
Easy to use.
Versioning of files and folders.
7-zip integration.
A bug in the "open" window: when trying to select two folders to compare one have to select files first in both paths (left & right) and then remove the file name to select the desired folders.
Beyond Compare > WinMerge. Many features are still lacking in winmerge (having 2 kind of
differences to isolate code style changes (tab, spaces, etc) from real code changes, for example) to
make it a free alternative to Beyond Compare.
